Alabama Parent Education Center
The Alabama Parent Education Center has been awarded a Parent Information & Resource Center (PIRC) grant from the US Department of
Education, Office of Innovation and Improvement. These federal funds will assist parents and schools across Alabama.
All project activities help to:
Understand and implement Section 1118 of the No Child Left Behind Act; and
Increase academic achievement through Parent Involvement.
The Alabama PIRC goals are:
Assist parents in low performing schools with understanding the Alabama Accountability System, state and local school report cards and
opportunities for public school choice and supplemental educational services through School Improvement Institutes that consist of:
An evaluation of the current parent involvement status;
In service presentations of research based practices for school improvement; and
A series of workshops for parents to help them support their children's education.
Create a network of trained Parent Leaders throughout Alabama who implement local parent involvement activities through the Academy of
Parent Leadership and Engagement (APLE) that consists of:
A year long parent leadership academy; and
A long term support network for trained parent leaders.
Build state and local capacity for effective parent involvement by providing technical assistance in the implementation of effective parental
involvement policies and creating shared responsibility among parents and educators for student achievement through:
Participation on state and local committees; and
Publication of Research Briefs highlighting effective practices to support parent engagement.
Provide early childhood services to families and provide support for local early childhood programs in both urban and rural areas though:
Support of the Alabama HIPPY office.
